Rest vs. Distraction

In church tonight we spoke about how with all the technology in our world today we are constantly connected.  Which I think we can all admit to.  However, there was a point made that I found very interesting: rarely do we truly take time to stop and rest.  Most of the time, we are distracting ourselves, not actually resting or relaxing.  We say that we are going to rest, but we pop in a movie, power up the laptop or netbook, put our phone near us and start doing 10 things at once...at least, that's what I tend to do.

We were challenged to give up one technology item/gadget between now and Easter and see the difference it makes.  I'm going to take this challenge.  I agree that I spend way too much time "plugged in" and not enough time connected to the world around me.  This actually came at the perfect time because I was thinking how poorly have been doing on my 101 list.  Not on the things that involve technology but on the items that involve connecting with others.  I already missed at least two things on my list and there are others I could have started.

So here's my sacrifice: I am going to give up one hour of technology a day.  This may not seem like much but I think it will actually be huge.  On a typical day, I come home from work, power up Netflix and plop myself on the couch.  During this hour, I will take some time to intentionally be reading the Bible, journaling or praying.  After that, I will do other things I need/want to - clean, make dinner, bake, read or take a nap!  I won't necessarily spend the entire hour "resting" every time, but I will take the time to break from technology.  And, in an effort to be sure I keep this up, I'm going to track what I do with my time each day.

Who knows, maybe by the end of this, I will be able to actually take a whole hour to just rest...
